Skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Most skincare is fine in pregnancy. A few ingredients are usually avoided as a precaution. Always confirm with your doctor or midwife.
Usually avoided
- Retinoids: retinol, retinal, tretinoin, adapalene, retinyl esters.
- High-dose salicylic acid (peels, oral). Low-strength wash-off products are often considered acceptable; ask your doctor.
- Hydroquinone.
- Some essential oils in high amounts.
Generally considered fine
- Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides.
- Azelaic acid, vitamin C.
- Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide).
